چکیده

Seventeen French-English bilinguals read aloud a set of English sentences and performed an ABX discrimination task that assessed their perception of the English / /-/i/ contrast. Global nativelikeness in production correlated with pronunciation accuracy for the vowels / / and /i/, and both production measures correlated with self-estimated pronunciation skills. However, performance on the perception task did not correlate with either global nativelikeness or / ,i/ pronunciation accuracy. These results are discussed in light of theories about the relation between perception and production in L2 phonological processing.

Individual Differences in Executive Function and Phonological Processing: Implications

It is well established that people differ considerably in their ability to learn new languages, especially in the area of phonological processing. Recent research investigating individual differences in phonological processing suggest that factors other than well-studied predictors of success in L2 speech learning, such as age of onset of L2 learning or input quality and quantity, may be at the...

The relation between perceptual and production categories in acquisition

Results from two experiments on acquisition of the word initial voicing contrast are compared, one on perception, one on production. Both involved monolingual and bilingual (French/English) subjects. Monolinguals are shown to have frequent disparities between their use of parameters in production and perception. Furthermore, bilingualism is found to affect subjects' production and their percept...

Researching (Non) Fluent L2 Speakers’ Oral Communication Deficiencies: A Psycholinguistic Perspective

Fluency in a second language (L2) involves a quintessentially cognitive processing system that operates quickly and effectively. The perceived importance of researching fluency through a psycholinguistic lens has motivated the related L2 research to resort to current cognitive speaking-specific models. This study, drawing on Levelt’s (1999a) psycholinguistic model, probed the deficiency sources...

Phonologically Constrained Variability in L1 and L2 Production and Perception

The Special Issue (SI) “Phonologically constrained variability in L1 and L2 production and perception” contains a set of papers that substantially expand upon selected oral presentations at the conference Phonetics and Phonology in Iberia (PaPI), held in Lisbon in 2013. The papers converge in addressing a thematically coherent topic of current theoretical interest and importance at the interfac...

Relation between Phonological Processing, Auditory Processing and Speech Perception among Bilingual Poor Readers

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES A deficit in phonological processing abilities has been hypothesized as a cause of reading deficits among poor readers, but the precise etiology of this deficit is still unknown. Many studies have investigated the relation of auditory processing and speech perception with phonological processing, while the relation between these are not well understood. Thus, the prese...
